The Family of Daniel Looney and Deborah Casey of Quartermire, Knockanalban, County Clare, Ireland

The Looney Family of Quartermire, Knockanalban, County Clare, Ireland are recorded in the earliest records in the Parish of Kilmurry-Ibrickane.



They are listed in the Tithe Applotment Books of 1826 and 1834 and the Valuation of Tenents in 1855 in the Townland of Knockanalban.   The Looney family lived in a subdistrict of Knockanalban Townland called Quartermire.  In the 1826 Tithe Applotment Books for Quartermire there is John Looney, William Looney, Daniel Looney, Michael Looney Sr., Michael Looney Jr. and widow of Thady Looney.

In the 1855 Valuation of Tenents there was a consolidation of farms into larger acreage and we have John Looney, William Looney and William Looney (Daniel) and Daniel Looney (Daniel) .

Anthony O'Brien and Margaret Power of Kilmurry-Ibrickane Parish

The O'Brien family of Anthony O'Brien and Margaret Power resided in the Parish of Kilmurry-Ibrickane.  You can look for records in the church registers and civil records but you will not find any for this family.  Baptism records were started in 1839 and there are not any baptism records for their children.  Anthony and Margaret O'Brien are not listed and I only know about them from some documents that were found in the United States.  Even the property records which date back to 1826 did not list Anthony O'Brien so I do not know the townland the O'Brien family lived.

When I was researching grave sites at the Catholic Cemetery on Ellicott Street in Killbuck, NY; I found a grave stone for the Looney family that resided in Salamanca, Cattaraugus County, New York in 1880; buried there was Ellen Looney the mother of the family.  Ellen O'Brien Looney along with seven of her children immigrated to this rural community of Salamanca which is about 50 miles South of Buffalo, NY.  Ellen O'Brien Looney left the Looney farm in Quartermire, Knockanalban, County Clare, Ireland after her husband, William Looney died in 3 May 1877.

Ellen O'Brien Looney probably immigrated to this area because her sister Margaret O'Brien Stapleton was living as a widow in Salamanca with 5 of her children.

The information in this funeral book for the O'Brien and Looney families can be documented using the church records held in the Parish Office in Mullagh, County Clare, Ireland.

William Looney and Ellen O'Brien's marriage record was recorded in 1847 as well as most of the children's baptisms.  Ellen's sister, Mary O'Brien's marriage record was recorded to James Walsh of Bonavilla listing her as living in Ballymackea townland and their children's baptism records.

Information on the Looney family is also supported in the property and church records with Daniel Looney listed as occupier of land in the 1826 Tithe Applotment Books and three of his sons, Daniel, William and Michael Looney listed in the Valuation of Tenements from 1855.  I will post another page for the Looney family later on this blog.

The reason that I traveled to the Killbuck Graveyard was to take a picture of the gravestone of another O'Brien family from Miltown Malbay, Co. Clare that immigrated to Canada around 1854.  Anthony O'Brien b 1831 came over as a young man and married Mary Lyons in Toronto, Canada in 1855.  Their first four or five children were born in Canada before they moved to Randolf, Cattaraugus County, New York around 1866.  This family is listed in the 1870 Federal Census in Randolph, New York.  Most of this family moved to Buffalo, New York by 1900.  Buffalo in 1900 was a city of opportunity with nearly five hundred thousand residents.

A grand daughter, Sara O'Brien of Anthony O'Brien moved to Buffalo, NY in 1900 and lived with her grandfather and uncles and aunts in South Buffalo.  Her father, Michael O'Brien had died in 1895 and is buried in Killbuck Catholic Cemetery.  Sara O'Brien married in 1913 at St Teresa's RCC on Seneca Street to Michael Selbert.  In the wedding announcement was listed Anna Stapelton of Salamanca, NY in attendance.   Anna Stapelton is the daughter of Margaret O'Brien Stapelton who immigrated in 1851 to the USA.  She and her family were living in Salamanca, NY.    I now believe that the two O'Brien families that are buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Killbuck, New York are related.

1.      ANTHONY¹ O'BRIEN was born in 1800. He died in Miltown Malbay County Clare Ireland. He married MARGARET POWER. She was born about 1800. She died in Miltown Malbay County Clare Ireland.

Anthony O'Brien and Margaret Power had the following children:

		County Clare, Ireland. He died on 03 May 1878 in Quartermire, Knockanalban
		townland, County Clare, Ireland.

		O'Brien of Annagh). He was born about 1815 in Bonavilla, Ballymackea Beg,
		Kilmurry-Ibrickane, County Clare. He died in Bonavilla, Ballymackea Beg,
		Kilmurry-Ibrickane, County Clare.

4.      ELLEN² O'BRIEN (Anthony¹) was born in 1833 in Miltown Malbay, County Clare, Ireland. She died on 22 Mar 1907 in Salamanca, Cattaraugus, New York, USA (Age: 76). She married William Looney, son of Daniel Looney and Deborah Casey on 14 Jan 1847 in Kilmurry-Ibrickane Parish, County Clare, Ireland (Witnesses: John O'Brien and William Looney). He was born about 1830 in Quartermire, Knockanalban townland, County Clare, Ireland. He died on 03 May 1878 in Quartermire, Knockanalban townland, County Clare, Ireland.

6.      MARGARET² O'BRIEN (Anthony¹) was born in Apr 1835 in Ireland. She died after 1915 in Salamanca, Cattaraugus, New York, United States. She married THOMAS STAPELTON. He was born in 1822. He died on 20 Feb 1877 in Salamanca, Cattaraugus, New York, USA (Age: 55).

10.      MARY³ LOONEY (Ellen² O'Brien, Anthony¹ O'Brien) was born on 16 Jan 1848 in Quartermire, Knockanalban townland, County Clare, Ireland. She married MICHAEL O'CONNOR. He was born in Miltown Malbay, Co. Clare, Ireland. She married an unknown spouse in Mar 1878 in Ennistimon, Ireland.

Michael O'Connor and Mary Looney had the following children:

27.            iv.    ANDREW O'CONNOR was born on 02 Dec 1882 in Miltown Malbay, Co. Clare, Ireland.  Andrew was living with his grandmother in 1905 in Salamanca, NY.

She died on 17 Jan 1928 in Salamanca, Cattaraugus, New York, United States. She married WILLIAM TOBIN. He was born in 1858. He died in Mar 1888 in Salamanca, Cattaraugus, New York, United States.
